Back at the hotel, the Narrator ruminates on sleep and time, and observes the amusing mannerisms of the staff, who are mostly aware of Charlus's proclivities. Meanwhile, the novel kept growing in length and in conception. In Penguin undertook a fresh translation of the book by editor Christopher Prendergast and seven translators in three countries, based on the latest, most complete and authoritative French text. The proprietor turns out to be Jupien, who expresses a perverse pride in his business. As noted, the final three volumes of the novel were published posthumously, and without Proust's final corrections and revisions.

Mme Verdurin has married the Prince de Guermantes after both their spouses died. Verdurin: The husband of Mme Verdurin, who is her faithful accomplice. She served as partial inspiration for the character of Odette. He is not cleverer or more brilliant or more sensitive than we are.

Many of the themes later developed in In Search of Lost Time find their first articulation in this unfinished work, including the enigma of memory and the necessity of reflection; several sections of In Search of Lost Time can be read in first Marcel Proust and deliverance from time.

After several tries, the Narrator manages to be introduced to the Prince de Guermantes, who then walks off with Swann, causing speculation on the topic of their conversation. Proust showed that we are the Time Machines, though we are rarely at the controls.

At the same time, Grasset's firm was closed down when the publisher went into military service.
